Speak Essay
How would you like to have no friends and go to a school where everybody hates you because of something that you couldn’t control? Well for Melinda that’s what it was like; everybody hated her because of something that wasn’t her fault. Melinda had to go through the year trying to find out how to tell someone about what happened over the summer. For Melinda it was very hard to trust people with what happened, but she had to tell someone eventually. The book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is about a girl who is trying to “speak” up about what happened to her over summer vacation.
Melinda was an average teenager; she went to parties, had a lot of friends, and was popular. This all changed after the end of the summer party. After that horrible night when Melinda was raped she didn’t know how to speak up, so she held in what happened to her and told no one, not even her parents. This book is about Melinda’s journey to recovering from what happened to her.
While Melinda used to be popular she learned a lot from this experience. Over the course of the year Melinda learned that people are not who they seem and that you can’t blame yourself for things that are out of your control. When Melinda was raped by Andy Evens she had no idea what was going on. Andy took advantage of her just because she was drunk. Throughout the book Melinda slowly starts to accept that it wasn’t her fault that she was raped. By the end of the book Melinda tells her story and she gets the justice against Andy that she always wanted.
While Melinda is slowly starts to accept the facts, Andy remains oblivious to her. Andy is a horrible person in a lot of people’s minds. He has taken advantage of numerous girls and continues to do so. After he raped Melinda he didn’t talk to her again for a long time, instead he went and got a girlfriend. But even after all of that he still tried to rape Melinda again, but she wouldn’t let him, she spoke up that time.
This book is about speaking up for yourself, taking action against what happened, and accepting the fact that something’s are out of your control. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is about an average girl who goes through unfortunate events over the course of her freshmen year. In the end Melinda gets justice when Andy Even is caught, and she finally tells her story.

Art Piece
Running like lightning on rubber donuts,
All hope is gone
The tire scraps are scattered over the ground
I can smell burnt rubber as the cars collided

Out of thin air, it appeared
driven like a scared cheetah
two power-driven cars collide
an explosion of noise ending our ride

The explosion scares me
Crystal windows burst
Chaos brakes lose

People run in every direction
Their screams echo in my head
The end is near
